Grade 11 Red Spartans develop smart paint mixer for the color blind

March 10, 2025

Leading innovations towards addressing global concerns, BatStateU-IS Grade 11 students developed a prototype machine equipped with a color detector and smart paint mixer. Featured in the “Game Changer” segment of GMA News 24 Oras on the January 20 episode, The Art Collaboration (TACO) machine was designed to assist individuals with color deficiency or color blindness in identifying the accurate colors and classify them into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. It is an automated painting system crafted from eco-friendly materials and powered by rechargeable batteries.

“We chose to address the issue of diminishing interest in art, particularly in relation to color deficiency because we saw these as niche concerns that deserved more attention. Art is a vital form of expression, and the barriers that prevent people from engaging with it motivated us to create a solution that could spark renewed interest and accessibility,” explained Allynah Macatangay, one of the developers, as they also aimed to address a unique and meaningful challenge.

Approximately 2.83% of the Filipino population, which translates to around 3 million individuals, are color deficient. A study by Kaufman-Scarborough reveals that Color Vision Deficiency is more prevalent in males due to genetic factors. This is further supported by a journal published by the Philippine Journal of Ophthalmology, which reported a prevalence of 5.17% for color deficiency among male high
school students at Cayetano Arellano High School.

Developers Allynah and Edwin recognize the role of their academic environment in significantly influencing the development of the TACO machine. “From the resources provided by the school (BatStateU-IS) to the continuous support and mentorship from our teachers, every aspect of our academic community contributed to our success,” shared co-developer Edwin Macuha Jr., adding that the TACO machine led them to the final league of the First Lego League (FLL), a prestigious national competition.
Reflecting BatStateU’s service motto of “Leading Innovations, Transforming Lives and Building the Nation,” this prototype is set to revolutionize art education, making it more inclusive, efficient, and accessible.
