In response to the global call of environmental sustainability, Batangas State University – The National Engineering University positioned itself as a leading higher education institution in creating a lasting positive impact on the planet as it launched the pledge in planting 1.2 Million Trees (SPARTAN1M). In commemorating its 120th founding anniversary this year, BatStateU proudly marked the occasion with a remarkable initiative — the planting of the first batch of 120,000 trees. This significant undertaking was a collective effort by the constituent campuses of the university. As of writing, the university planted 21,663 trees (Pablo Borbon- 3,389; Alangilan- 2,535; ARASOF-Nasugbu- 8,270; Lipa- 1,356; and JPLPC-Malvar- 6,113) contributing to the ongoing effort to nurture and preserve the environment.

Simultaneously, the Climate Change Lecture centered on the theme “From Crisis to Action: Mobilizing Academic Communities for Climate Change” was conducted. In the lecture, Dr. Nickie Boy Manalo presented the University Climate Change Action Plan (UCCAP). The plan is a comprehensive and strategic initiative of the University designed to address the challenges posed by climate change. Dr. Manalo emphasized the plan’s targets, mitigation, and adaptation approaches, providing participants with valuable insights on how they can actively contribute to its realization.

Hon. Loren B. Legarda, the Senate President Pro Tempore also graced the event by sending a heartwarming message to the participants emphasizing to them the important role of the university in climate action. Her message was delivered by Dr. Vaberlie Mandane-Garcia on her behalf.

Towards the end of the event, Dr. Vaberlie P. Mandane – Garcia, the Sustainable Development Officer of the University launched the BatStateU’s Best Sustainable Project Awards. The said awards will serve as a platform to recognize and showcase exemplary projects that embody a steadfast commitment to campus sustainability. This year’s call for submission of most sustainable projects with the theme “Culture of Sustainability: Transforming Mindsets, Shaping Practices” as the University aimed to foster a comprehensive understanding of sustainability that goes beyond environmental concerns. The emphasis was on projects that not only addressed ecological aspects but also delved into the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainability.

The event took place at 5/F, Function Hall of SSC Building II of Pablo Borbon Campus in Batangas City on December 13, 2023 from 9:00 am until 12:00 nn. The event was participated by the students, faculty, and administrative officials of the eleven (11) campuses of the University headed by the Sustainable Development Officers of constituent campuses.
This endeavor aligns to the Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 15.
